Taking Stock of the Comedy Landscape

So here we are with the smoke clearing after a number of surprising shows have been shelved or had the plug pulled. I was crushed that My Name is Earl didn’t make the list of shows we’ll be seeing for another season, though not as much as my fiance was I think. Hey you other networks, pick that up already!

Other comedies fared better or worse, depending on your perspective, with ABC’s “Modern Family” appearing fairly high on the viwer totem pole. I think making fun of suburbia is all well and good, but would I sit down and watch it week in and week out? Probably not…I mean I live in suburbia everyday, I’m quite aware about what a hilariously sad reality it can be.

I don’t really understand this one, but Fox renewed ‘Til Death with a full season. The previous year it did pretty badly, and the network yanked it off for awhile, but I guess they must think it has potential int here somewhere, it’s just that there aren’t any viewers around to find it. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realize that According To Jim was even still around, but it is gone now!

Why would someone ever put 30 Rock in stasis. I mean I suppose given the somewhat star-power it has maybe the show is expensive to make, but everytime I hear about it, it seems to have won a new reward. Why not just keep it going rather than shelving it until midseason? I don’t think it will be hone for long.

Finally, I’ll take a moment to examine Scrubs, which appears to be somewhere between being reborn and put down. Scrubs will be back again (shockingly) but the main character, Zach Braff, will only be in six episodes. Who’s going to take over for him? I mean, he WAS the show since it started, with plenty of great and witty characters but they pretty much were great and witty as they related to Zach. I don’t know who will watch the show without him, but I know I won’t.

House Finale Short Recap

Now, if there’s one formulaic show on TV today, it would have to be House. Every episode is pretty much a rehash of any other with a few slightly different spices of variation. Despite this fact, I’ve always been intrigued by the show and really I can’t argue with the popularity of the series either. As such, I’m sure many are wondering what happened in the most recent finale, and there are some spoilers ahead.

The episode explored a number of interesting psychological complexities, such as the examination of left and right brained people. Last week Cuddy and House finally got together as she helped him kick his painkiller habit, and we’re in the aftermath of that as he tries to figure out exactly how she feels about him. In the midst of this of course we still have a patient to be diagnosed as well, but as usual House is the center of attention. Cameron and Chase, meanwhile, are still slogging it out on their way to actually getting married.

Throughout the episode he’s either delving into a diagnosis possibility or playing head games with Cuddy. Unfortunately House can’t seem to keep everything together in his head, since it turns out that Cuddy and him never actually had sex, and he hallucinated the whole thing. We finally come to this realization when he’s visited by Amber, and she’s accompanied by Kutner. If you’ve been following the show at all, you know that Kutner is already toast from when he offed himself (the “I’m going to Obama’s Administration” would have made for a good storyline too!) Faced with this realization, house checks himself into a psychiatric facility.

What Will Happen to Dollhouse?

There seems to be a number of half-decent shows that could face the proverbial chopping block these days. I mean, when “My Own Worst Enemy” got canceled shortly after it debuted, I wasn’t really upset. Chuck, however, is something I’d be very disappointed to see get the axe. After all, there are few things worse (in relation to TV) than having your favorite show cut early with no final episode in sight. It leaves the whole story in an infinite period of stasis, with no real idea as to what happened to your beloved characters. It is the TV equivalent of hell.

Now, Dollhouse comes from a rather intelligent creator (Joss Whedon, who created Firefly and Buffy), and I was a huge fan of Firefly. Yet the show itself has had rather lackluster ratings, and while the story of “Dolls” that are essentially slaves who learn to break their programming is intriguing, it hasn’t really worked up much steam.

Personally I’d enjoy seeing the series come back for another season. The first was just interesting enough to keep me going, but not so much that I’ll be extraordinarily disappointed if the plug gets pulled. I suppose I have enough faith that Whedon will make adjustments and pick up the base in a new season. Of course this is all dependent upon the show being renewed by Fox…yeah, I’m not feeling very good about that either.

Is Chuck Toast?

My fiance has absolutely adored show Chuck and is pretty much the only TV show she watches on any sort of regular basis. The amusing, geekishly funny show seems to have quite a following as well. Unfortunately, a loyal fan base does not always mean the best ratings, anf it appears that NBC is still on the fence about whether they’d like to keep Chuck rolling. If you asked me, this last season actually would have been an ok end point right up until (SPOILER) Chuck got the interlink (spelling?) put back into his brain. I also love Chevy Chase, even though he’s old and busted, so I’m happy with any show that he’s in!

Now, the fans aren’t going to take this one lying down. In fact, fans are combining other causes into renewing the show as well. The idea is that fans will head over to the AHA donation site and make a contribution in the name of Chuck Bartowsky, and insert the addressed for top NBC exevs who will receive acknowledgement of the gist. I’ll give them points for creativity here, all things considered.

I’m not sure if this matters or not, but NBC has announced a number of other shows that have officially been renewed. Heroes, Southland, Parks and Recreation (HUH!?) will all be back. Still in the gray area? My Name is Earl, Law and Order, and of course…Chuck. So far, the buzz seems to be telling us that Chuck has a shot here, and if enough fans can send notice to the guys at the top, maybe they’ll bring the show back. Come on guys, my fiance would be crushed!

Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 5 Online

The latest season of Grey’s Anatomy kicked off on September 25 of 2008 with a two-hour season premiere. It was helped in part by the third season of Ugly Betty, which helped to bring in additional viewers.

So far, the season has strayed quite a bit from it’s previous iterations. We haven’t really seen all that much of the romance between Derek and Meredith, which may as well been the flagship of season four. Derek does find Meredith’s mother’s journal from when she was a resident though, and Meredith has her own issues to deal with when she reads them over. Lexie and the other interns perform procedures…on themselves… and we also find Denny Duquette making a reappearance, as a sort of..hallucination, I guess. Many viewers speculated that this was due to a brain tumor, but Rhimes recently announced that isn’t the case.

We haven’t quite yet wrapped up season 5, but so far I’ve been kinda “meh” about the season thus far. We’ll see how it finishes out.

Gossip Girl Season 3

So the next iteration of Gossip Girl will be season 3, set to debut in the fall of 2009. Season 2 has been particularly frustrating for many viewers, with some threatening to turn the show off for good after the latest twist.

Much of the hullballoo stems from the words of executive producer Stephanie Savage. Stephanie said that we can expect Nate and Blair’s relationship (which has only been recently rekindled) will have a rather short running time. We’re only taking a few more episodes in the season. In addition, we also found out that Chuck and Blair will be getting together in season 3.

Some viewers are mad that they have to watch Blair and Nate again at all (though some would say it’s an improvement over Chuck). If you’re curious, or just have no idea what I’m talking about, you can head over to the official site, where they have full episodes of the latest season.

Until then, you’re going to just have to wait it out until season 3 shows up.

Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 4 Online

Season 4 came off to a tumultuous start. The show’s creator passed off the series’ day to day operations to Krista Vernoff, and Kate Walsh’s character was transferred to her own spin off show Private Practice. We also received an announcement in mid 2007 that Isaiah Washington’s contract wasn’t going to be renewed either.Ouch.

The season was interrupted for some time due to the WGA strike, but returned on April 24, 2008 for five new episodes. These episodes revolved mostly around Meredith and Derek working together with cancer patients, all of whom die, except for one girl who, tragically, loses her boyfriend right before the life saving surgery. The whole experience brings Derek and Meredith closer together and he ends up breaking up with Rose. The season also setup a lesbian story line which played a significant role in season five.

Watch Grey’s Anatomy Season 3 Online

Grey’s Anatomy may have waned in recent seasons in overall viewers, but the show still has a fiercely loyal fan base. Season 3 showed that the show still had plenty of fight left. Primarily it revolved around Izzie’s struggle to let Denny go, with Meredith having to choose between Finn and Derek. Burke’s injury also played a part in the season, as did the choice for a new Chief of Surgery and Chief Resident.

SPOILERS AHEAD! We also found out Burke called off his wedding to Cristina at the church (gasp!). Chief Webber decided to stay on as Chief of Surgery, and Callie was appointed the Chief Resident. Derek’s relationship with Meredith and the issues between Callie and George and Izzie were all left hanging.

April Link Roundup

Spring is finally here! I don’t know where the time goes, but at any rate there are a lot of great TV shows on right now (Lost Season 5, 24 Season 7), and best off all this year there is no writers strike to deal with. I figured I would share some other great articles from around the blogosphere, since I have been doing a lack of posting recently on OnlineVideoHacks.

Satellite TV Guru has a list of places to watch weeds season 5 online, this is especially useful if you don’t have Showtime but still watch to catch the latest episodes.

Prison Break Season 4 is returning next week and the Guru also has a list of places to watch that show online as well.

CreditShout has a review of Best Buy Credit Card. Best Buy has tried to lure me into getting one of these cards many times, but according to CreditShout your better of with a Cash Back Credit Card.
